After years of vacancy, the monumental Water Tower on the Amsterdamsestraatweg in Utrecht was given a new life as an exclusive residential building. The more than one-hundred-year-old tower was transformed into three studio apartments and an impressive multi-level private residence within the former water reservoir, offering panoramic views over the city.
The design focused on carefully introducing daylight, views and outdoor spaces without compromising the character of the Amsterdam School architecture. Original elements such as the robust brickwork, steel structures and the water reservoir itself remain visible, forming a layered and compelling contrast with contemporary interventions.
Together with Zecc Architecten, I created a strong photographic series. Despite the circular geometry, the spatial quality remains clear and legible. By working precisely with light, we captured moments that convey the unique atmosphere of the tower.
